Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A rare example of a cast bronze sheep votive - sheep were not common subjects for Roman artisans. The sheep stands with its head cocked, turned slightly towards the viewer, atop an integral platform. The main decorative motif on the body consists of repeated incised lines that give the impression that the animal has a thick, wavy coat. Probably made to be given as an offering. Size: 2.65" W x 2.5" H (6.7 cm x 6.4 cm)

A similar example was sold at Christie's London in 2011 for GBP 3750 (approximately $5000 USD): https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-roman-bronze-sheep-circa-3rd-4th-century-5425458-details.aspx
