Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
Rome, Imperial Period, probably northern Roman Empire/Celtic region, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pretty, symmetrical cast bronze brooch with deep, rectilinear grooves, that would once have been full of brightly colored enamel (and still have some remains of enamel in them). The heads of the dragon include wide concentric circles that form eyes, which is a very common symbol in Roman/Celtic/Viking artwork that we believe was a ward against the evil eye. The dragon form - probably more what we would think of as a serpent - may have been inspired by Roman contacts with Celtic peoples at the northern and western fringes of their empire. Comes with custom stand. Size: 0.95" W x 1.95" H (2.4 cm x 5 cm); height on stand: 1.65" (4.2 cm)
Provenance: private Dr. K.B. collection, Munich, Germany, acquired in the 1970s
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
