Description
A Medieval limestone head of a bearded man, c. 12th - 14th Century, handsomely modeled in a more archaic style for the period, which was popular in some areas. The face is frontally carved with detailed hair, beard and somewhat gaunt cheeks. 9 x 7 1/4 in (22.8 x 16.3 cm). Well-preserved with moderate surface deposits. Mounted on a nice custom base. Ex collection of John Marriott, former Keeper of the Royal Philatelic Collection from 1969 to 1995, acquired prior to 1980.
