New York Law Assistant District Attorney Badge (1940"s) Bertram D, Sarafan once served under the Famous District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey. Thomas Edmund Dewey was an American lawyer, prosecutor, and politician. He served as the 47th Governor of New York from 1943 to 1954. In 1944, he was the Republican Party's nominee for President. (Quote New York Times: When Mr. Dewey was elected Manhattan District Attorney in 1938, Mr. Sarafan went to work for him at a big raise—to $1,500 a year —and stayed on through the first three terms of Frank S. Hogan. During World War II he was in personnel work in the Army and later served in the military government in Japan and Korea.)
