Description
Glazed ceramic with paint and gold. Japan, Meiji period
The edge is recessed at five points, the lip gilded. In the well, young ladies are depicted with their playing sons who are, for example, trying to catch a butterfly. Also featured is a dwelling; lake and mountains in the background. The borders around the edge are geometric and floral, intricate and extremely fine. On the outside are flying insects, above which is a dense composition of blossoms in the most varied of colors. The upper border with “thunder pattern” is in the style of Chinese leiwen. On the bottom is the Shimazu family crest as well as the framed signature SHU-ZAN 珠 山.
