Description
Wood and polychrome lacquer. Japan, Edo period or earlier
A rare and expressive polychrome-lacquered figure of a Rakan. He is seated on a hollowed plinth, with one hand raised and the other resting on his lap. His partially incised robes are flowing and expressively carved, lacquered in green and red and accentuated with gold. The face is carved with astonishing detail and wit; the nose and lips sensitively sculpted with his two front teeth showing. Long pierced ears and the eyes are double inlaid with glass.
Condition: Severe flaking to lacquered layers and loss of details. Cracking to wood and one repaired break through the detachable head. Possibly once was holding something in his right hand (partial loss to the hand).
Provenance: From an Austrian private collection
