Description
This is the 1846 revision of the first hardcover american publication of Herman Melville's first book Typee (307 pages). This revised state, published months after the first state hardcover, in addition to Typee parts one and two, has the brief Story of Toby at its end. It does not have the map that was in the first state. It does have editorial ads at the beginning of part two and at the end of the book. The cover (app. 4.875" x 7.5"), leather spine and outside corners, marbled paper boards, is worn, with scuffs to the spine and corners, which are bumped, and lighter scuffs to the boards. The gilt title is partly faded but clearly legible (see photo). Front and back covers are connected. The marbled inside cover spreads have darkening to the upper outside corners, but no other flaws. The only writing is a name and apparent address (Hartford, Conn?) to the first blank spread. There are no stamps or other attachments. The body pages are in very good condition, with a number of slight corner creases, but no sharp creases and no page tears. The binding is tight, with no loose or missing pages. There are no notable stains, and no fade to the text, which is clean throughout. The above photos are accurate reflections of the book conditions.
