Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A fabulous polychrome effigy vessel of a generally globular form depicting a highly-decorated male shaman who holds ceremonial implements in both hands, perhaps a staff and shield, perhaps a percussive musical instrument (drum in left hand and stick to produce a beat in the right). His expressive face features tattoo-like marks surrounding his eyes, a pointy nose, and full lips, and is capped by a headband/headdress with prominent zoomorphic horns/ears. Adding to his regalia is a white tunic/vest with 'beaded' and fringed sleeves. Finely painted with vivid polychrome pigments in hues of red, cream, white, and black. Size: 4.5" W x 7.25" H (11.4 cm x 18.4 cm).
