Western Africa, Mali, Dogon people, ca. early 20th century CE. An interesting depiction of half of a figure, carved from a light-brown hardwood and detailed with dark-brown paint, with an integral circular base. The half-figure has a solid cylindrical body with a single carved sinuous band which represents the shoulders and arms. A slender neck supports a hemispherical head. The head has a dome-shaped back half, a broad forehead, as well as a recessed face with almond-shaped eyes, a petite nose, and a thin mouth curved into a slight smile. Size: 5.55" H (14.1 cm).

Provenance: ex-Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired before 1970
