Description
Central Asia, India, ca. mid-20th century CE. A gorgeous, heavy necklace made by the Naga culture composed of thick, dark red opaque glass beads on a thick, woven string. The clasp is joined with a coin with excellent patina - an Indian coin from 1959. The Naga people are a combination of tribes in northeastern India and northwestern Burma; during the time that this necklace was made, they still led a very traditional lifestyle and engaged in headhunting. During the great ritual occasions in their calendar, men and women dress in ceremonial clothing and ornaments, including a necklace like this one. Length of strand: 29" L (73.7 cm)
