1964 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet
1964 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet
Item Details
Description
Est. 95bhp, 1,582 cc horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission, four-wheel independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 82.7"

At first glance the 356C, introduced in mid-1963, differed little from the prior 356B, and continued to use the T-6 body type, which was introduced in 1962. Porsche, however, brought the 356 concept to its zenith with the 356C, which was available in coupe and cabriolet form. The new 356 also benefited from the addition of standard Dunlop four-wheel disc brakes, a higher-lift camshaft for the 1600 C engine, new flat-face hubcaps and deeper 'bucket' seats, courtesy of Porsche's acquisition of Reutter, which included the future Recaro subsidiary. 356 models imported to America also included positive crankcase ventilation, to meet toughening vehicle emissions standards.

The sporty 1600 SC in particular, formerly known as the Super 90, marked Porsche's highest evolution of the 356 series prior to the advent of the 911 and was joined by the Carrera 2 and more standard 1600 C. The SC cabriolet was available with an optional detachable steel hardtop.

This particular 356 SC is offered complete with one such removable hardtop along with its correct, new soft top, both of which are black. The car was treated to a thorough restoration by Vintage Auto Collectibles and was chosen for its lack of damage or corrosion before being restored to as-new factory standards, utilizing correct materials throughout. It was stripped to bare metal for inspection, the undercarriage was completely undercoated and the floors and battery box sides were replaced. The car was meticulously finished in the original Porsche Light Ivory (paint code 6404) and the interior was upholstered in black leather, according to the original Porsche specification. A new headliner, carpets, mats and windshield were also installed, to name but a few additions. All mechanical components were also examined and expertly rebuilt or replaced with new parts. The engine was rebuilt to factory specification and the transmission, suspension and brakes were completely refurbished. The gauges, in particular, were restored by North Hollywood Speedometer. The car also benefits from European headlights and new chrome-plating as well as a Certificate of Authenticity to accompany its professional restoration.

As would be expected of a car of such perpetual refinement, the Porsche 356 SC is widely considered the ultimate iteration of Porsche's first production sports car. Perfectly balanced, proportioned and powered, it is a true delight to drive, particularly when offered with the additional hardtop.
