**Originally Listed At $950**

Central Asia, India, ca. 18th century CE. A stunning cast-bronze depiction of Radha, the Hindu goddess of beauty, kindness, and love. She stands atop an integral circular base with eight lotus flower petals and a scalloped edge, her feet firmly planted with remnants of cinnabar between her stylized toes. Her delineated legs support her wide hips and slender waist, with prominent breasts and rounded shoulders defining her delicate stature. Gentle facial features outline her serene visage, framed by large, perforated ears, her hair parted back and bound on the verso. Areas of russet- and espresso-hued patina imbue the figure with an earthtone appearance, perhaps representative of her humble beginnings as a gopi (cow-herding milk maid). A breathtaking depiction of one of the most beloved figures in the Hindu religion! Size: 7.375" H (18.7 cm).

Radha and Krishna had quite a history beginning in childhood when they grew up together, playing, dancing, and hoping to spend the rest of their lives together; unfortunately, the universe pulled them apart. Krishna came to be worshipped as a lord who defended his people and vanquished his enemies, while Radha waited for him. Krishna married Rukmini and Styabhama; he raised a family and fought valiantly in the war of Ayodyha, while Radha still waited - so immense was her love for Krishna. Song writers and poets have used their torrid love as inspiration for centuries.

The Radha-Krishna romance is a prominent subject of Indian art and literature, serving as a model of allegorical love to which all should aspire. Radha was Krishna's favorite of all the gopis (cow herding maidens), and their love signified rapture between God and human soul has often been interpreted as the hope for the union between humanity and the divine.
