Description
Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. Finely painted on heavy gauge tin a wonderful retablo depicting Nuestra Senora del Pueblo (Our Lady of the People) featuring the Virgin Mary dressed in beautiful jewel tone red and blue robes with golden and white embellishments, a golden crown with radiating rays of light and stars, clasping her hands in prayer, and floating in the celestial realm accompanied by the Holy Spirit in the form of a white dove. Below her is St. Francis of Assisi, dressed in blue robes with his white knotted cord belt, holding three orbs above him - perhaps reflecting his three vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience - and kneeling between a pair of angels in a field of blooming flowers.
