Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Paquime/Casas Grandes, 1150 to 1450 CE. A polychrome vessel of a round-bottomed form with twin loop handles joining rim to shoulder, the body decorated with three registers containing linear, stepped, and spiraled motifs in a style of decoration that some have interpreted as being inspired by the southwestern landscape. The decoration style, with its fine lines, belongs to the Ramos Polychrome group, which represents the pinnacle of achievement for Casas Grandes ceramics. Casas Grandes is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and was a hugely important intermediary - in terms of trade, art, and culture - between the empires of Mesoamerica and the Ancestral Puebloans (Anasazi) of the US Southwest. Repaired from multiple pieces. Surface wear commensurate with age and exposure showing some pigment loss, scratches, and abrasions. Areas of mineral deposits and earthen encrustation. Old label on underside; remains of old label on shoulder.
