MANUEL CIL (SPANISH / AMERICAN, 19TH CENTURY) FOLK ART MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF A MAN, watercolor, finely dressed subject with blue overcoat seated in a Classical side chair, signed at lower left edge. Unframed. Circa 1825. 3 1/4" x 2 5/8".
Thin two-inch vertical crack starting at bottom edge and running through subject's left shoulder, minor surface abrasions, one near subject's right eye.
Catalogue Note: Manuel Cil was a Spanish-born miniaturist who spent time in the 1820's working in Charleston, SC. Recently discovered, the present miniature portrait strongly resembles a signed and dated example depicting a documented Charleston sitter which was recorded by MESDA in 1974 (Object #52626).
