Description
WILLIAM PITT THE YOUNGER WAX PORTRAIT, waist-length, wearing a dark cloak highlighted with gilding, holding a scrolled document in left hand, background with gilt inscription "The Right Honorable William Pitt". Hounded under glass in the original black-painted shadow-box frame with ripple-molded edges. Late 18th/early 19th century. 8 1/4" SQ OA.
Portrait in excellent condition, frame with some touchups to flaking paint.
Catalogue Note: William Pitt (1759-1806) was the first elected Prime Minister of Great Britain. Elected in 1783 at the age of 24, he is the youngest person to hold the position. Pitt helped strengthen the British economy after the War of Independence. He aided in the passage of restrictions on England's gold reserves through the issue of paper money, the first pound notes.
