Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine hand-built terracotta warrior figure standing atop delineated legs in a wide stance. Wearing a plaited skirt with several dangling ornaments, the warrior is posed in an aggressive presentation with thick chest armor, arm and leg cuffs, holding a small club in his left hand and a triangular celt in his right, with a large beaded necklace hanging from his thick neck. The minimalist head depicts a large, upturned nose, perky ears, and a pair of coffee-bean-shaped eyes, though the majority is hidden beneath a hefty crested helmet with a segmented curving peripheral border, a pair of bell-shaped ornaments, and a trio of tab-shaped feathers with incised grooves. Traces of the original red-orange slip are visible, though much of the exterior exhibits a buff surface. Two small perforations in the helmet produce a high-pitched sound when blown into like a whistle. A fabulous example from ancient West Mexico! Size: 4.5" W x 6.25" H (11.4 cm x 15.9 cm).

Repairs to both leg cuffs, celt, and right arm near shoulder. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age as expected, fading and losses to pigmentation, small chips to feet, body, arms, and head, and fading to some finer details. Scattered areas of light mineral deposits and pigmentation traces, and nice earthen deposits throughout.
