Greece, probably Tanagra, Boeotia, Hellenistic period, ca. late 4th to 3rd century BCE. A lovely mold-formed terracotta head of a beautiful woman, her hair drawn back and held with a braided hair band, and wavy bangs framing her delicate countenance. Almond-shaped eyes, a miniscule nose, full lips drawn into a slight smile, and slender cheeks define her elegant visage, with a naturalistic neck line and petite ears as well. A lovely example! Custom wooden display stand included. Size: 2.5" H (6.4 cm); 4.25" H (10.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA; ex-Bonham's London Antiquities Auction, 8 May, 2013, part of lot 205; ex-Jil Danon collection (d. 2012), Paris, France, formed between 1940s and 1980

Condition
Head is a fragment of a larger figure. Age-commensurate surface wear, fading to some features, small nicks to neck line, face, and hair, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
