Description
1678 RARE Geography Dictionary Augustin Lubin Mercure Geographique Catholic Church
An incredibly rare and valuable French geographical dictionary by Augustin Lubin. Lubin’s ‘Mercure Geographique’ includes definitions of important Latin terms along with their equivalencies in other languages; as well as short sections related to maps and map making.
Lubin is also well-recognized as being one who proposed the various names given to the seas. Lubin states in ‘Mercure Geographique’
“It derives its name for the various regions of the world, such as the Sea of the Setting Sun & the Sea of the Rising Sun, the North Sea & South Sea; or because of the True or Apparent color of its waters, such as the Black Sea, White Sea, and the Red Sea, or by the country whose coasts it washes, or of some famous place that it touches such as the Adriatic Sea or by its figure like the Baltic Sea.”
He also writes on how to illustrate or map the Catholic Church.“The Church’s commonly and rightly accepted title ‘Catholic’, that is to say, universal, clearly shows that it has no other boundaries than those of the Earth itself, the Gospels having ben preached in all the Earth’s corners.”
