Description
1685 1ed English Astrology Almanac Meteorology Planets Comets Popish Plot John Gadbury

John Gadbury was a 17th-century English astrologer known for his important almanacs, particularly those on astronomy and meteorology. By many, Gadbury was considered to be the epitome of religious radicals during the 1650s, focusing on the influence of astrology on established religious beliefs. In his many works, Gadbury discussed the significance of lunar and solar eclipses according to astrological signs, and one of his most controversial views was, according to Burns,“his position that comets and other celestial and terrestrial prodigies could be used, with appropriate caution, for the purpose of foreseeing the future.”He even claimed that comets seen in the mid-1670s were heralds of the Popish Plot.

In his work ‘Ephemeris’, Gadbury collects major world events and categorizes them in conjunction with scripture and English history. He charts the phases of the moon, major historical events happening in each month, length of daylight, solar motion of the planets, and the visibility of Jupiter and Saturn from earth.

An impressive 1685 almanac by a highly influential astrologer!
