Description
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, probably Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. An unusual form of oinochoe (oinechoe, oenochoe), this blackware vessel presents a long, slender, and attractively ribbed piriform body rising to a cylindrical neck that resolves in a trefoil lip, with a high looped handle joining rim to shoulder, and sits upon a flat base. The piece is glazed in a deep, glossy black that may have been intended to imitate bronze. Campanian wares, one of the five types of known pottery produced in the Greek South Italic colonies, were made by Greek colonists in the cities of Capua and Cumae. Size: 8.625" H (21.9 cm)

Condition
The handle and the upper section (above ribbed section) have been repaired and reattached with some repainting. There is a small chip to the edge of the base. The black glaze, particularly on the lower ribbed section of the body, has developed a gorgeous iridescence over time.
