Aaron Douglas was an illustrator, painter, and muralist and the foremost visual artist of the Harlem Renaissance. Upon moving to New York in 1925, Aaron Douglas became a staple in the burgeoning Harlem Renaissance artist community, illustrating texts for a myriad of notable authors: Langston Hughes, Charles S. Johnson, Countee Cullen, Wallace Thurman, and James Weldon Johnson. His paintings, for which he is now renowned, synthesize his cultural heritage with modernism, and speak to fears and aspirations of African Americans at the time.

This piece is notable for its bold, silhouetted figures interspersed with crisp, vibrant art deco shapes. Douglas’s signature style follows the tenets of early twentieth-century modernism and intertwines it them with distinct African iconography, an idea that is readily visible in this piece.
