Description
A nice Roman bronze fitting with the head of an eagle, c. 1st - 2nd Century AD, the head beautifully detailed and atop a faceted post, an upturned human finger at front, rivet hole for attachment at back. H: 2 3/8 in (6.1 cm). Nicely patinated. Items such as these are often referred to as chariot fittings or mounts, most often larger than our example. This object served a similar purpose, the exact context obviously impossible to know. Ex Boston private collection.
