Museum Quality Sumba Tubular Ceremonial Wrap "Lau Witikau Ngeri". Cotton, cowrie shells and beads. The beaded figure is the marapu, the first deified ancestor of the clan who takes an active part in protecting the clan. The face of marapu can never be seen and so is never depicted in the beaded image. Such cloths were given to the offspring of royalty as wedding gifts to confer the protective power of the marapu on the new branch of the family. The cloths were also used as royal funerary processional cloths. Round, cut open width doubles. Size: 1'11'' x 6'2'' (58 x 188 cm). 4 lbs.
