Post-Revolutionary War to Civil WarSent to Prison in 1795 for Swearing in Massachusetts

May 9, 1795, Manuscript Document, Pay Order for Deputy Sheriff for Arresting and Taking to Prison a Man Guilty of "Profain Swaring," Very Fine.
This original, handwritten, 4.25" x 7.5" document, written and signed by Benajah Mason, Deputy Sheriff of Bristol County, MA, seeks compensation of $3 for "...Apprehending and Commuting to Prison, James Shearman for Profain Swaring..." A signed notation at the bottom indicates that the payment had been approved, and additional docketing appears on the back. This document is in great condition, with light age toning and a little original smudging of the ink in the upper left. Otherwise complete, without holes or tears. An interesting look at life in early Massachusetts.
