Description
**First Time At Auction**
Central Asia, Indus Valley, Harappan / Mohenjo-Daro civilization, ca. 2700 to 2000 BCE. An incurved terracotta bowl with a flat base, wide walls, curved shoulders, a deep interior cavity, and an unpronounced rim. Accentuating the exterior of the vessel is a vibrant decorative register depicting a pair of bulls, defined by bovine heads, curved horns, and bulbous back humps, their bodies colored with alternating vertical red and teal stripes on a gold ground. Separating each animal are sections of geometric motifs decorated in a similar pigmentation schema as the animals. Artistic representations of humped bulls occur throughout the area and it has been theorized by the excavators of Harappa that they symbolize the "leader of the herd" - powerful, strong, and virile. Size: 4.75" W x 4.85" H (12.1 cm x 12.3 cm)
Provenance: private S. S. collection, Los Angeles, California, USA
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
