Description
**First Time At Auction**
Oceania, Samoa, Pago Pago, ca. 1890s CE. A large, hand-carved wooden war club with a flat, blade-like face with a small hook on one side, a toothed edge along the other side, and all carved as one with a long, cylindrical handle. Along one side of the handle is an incised statement, "Faatona na I Pagopago." Both sides of the blade are decorated with incised linear, zigzag, and triangular motifs inlaid with chalky white clay, and along the tops of both faces are portions of the statement incised along the handle. The craftsman who made this weapon would have been a highly-valued member of society, and was part of a distinctive group within society; their choices of design and ornamentation related to the body art in their culture. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 6.25" W x 27.875" H (15.9 cm x 70.8 cm); 29.75" H (75.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small chips to some teeth and along flat edge and handle, with light roughness across blade faces, and some losses to inlaid clay. Light earthen deposits and great brown patina throughout.
