Africa, Republic of Benin, ca. 20th century CE. A lengthy brass side-blown trumpet, made of brass in a horn-like form, with a curved upper shaft and a wide tone hole with three stylized rings near the bottom. A recessed ovoid mouthpiece rests roughly halfway up the horn, and is meant to be played similar to a flute. Larger examples made from ivory, called "akohen," are typically made to play for the Oba, or reigning king of the Benin, in order to symbolize his wealth and status. Smaller examples like this are made with brass by those of lower status within society as a sign of reverence towards the Oba. Size: 9.5" H (24.1 cm).
Provenance: ex-Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired before 1970
