Description
**Originally Listed At $150**
Africa, Republic of Benin, Fon peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden bust of a female, perhaps a fetish figure, and with brightly-painted surfaces in hues of orange, green, and dark-brown. Her large breasts serve as the base and taper to a thick neck. The dramatic visage is comprised of petite eyes, a slightly-flattened nose, puffy cheeks, and a miniscule mouth, with black-painted lines indicative of scarification along her cheeks. Twin lateral lobes and a crested top constitute the coiffure, and a segment of natural hair, likely human, lines the perimeter of her scalp, giving her a more-naturalistic appearance. Comes with custom wooden display stand. Size: 6.75" H (17.1 cm); 10.25" H (26 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired prior to 1970
