Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A cast bronze square traveling icon, depicting the Hospitality of Abraham, an important story from the Old Testament of three pilgrims visiting Abraham in the village of Mamre; the pilgrims are actually messenger angels of God. Here they are shown seated at a table; Abraham and his wife Sarah are omitted from the scene (they are sometimes included). Cyrillic letters around the border tell the story of the scene and a small, square projection from the upper side serves as a handle. Size: 1.9" W x 2.6" H (4.8 cm x 6.6 cm)
