**Originally Listed At $175**

Axel Herman Haig (Swedish, 1835-1921), "The Chapel of the Sacrament, St. Marks, Venice." 1899. Aquatint. "London Published November 20th 1899 by Roll Dunthorne, 5 Vigo Street London W" beneath image. A stunning rendering of the interior of the chapel of the sacrament in St. Mark's - the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese in Venice, one of the most impressive examples of Italo-Byzantine architecture, still standing at the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco, contiguous with the Doge's Palace. In this composition we see a clergyman kneeling in prayer before an image of the Virgin and Child, the mosaic above him featuring a Cross at the center. Size: image measures 16" L x 11.375" W (40.6 cm x 28.9 cm); sheet measures 20" L x 15" W (50.8 cm x 38.1 cm)

Axel Herman Haig was fascinated with the sea and ships and spent much of his youth sketching seascapes and building model boats. His love of the sea led him to study shipbuilding, but he eventually grew tired of ship design and shifted his attention to architecture. Haig was given the opportunity to design the residence of his employer in Glasgow, who was so pleased with the result that he got Haig a job at a firm that specialized in church design. Later Haig was employed by William Burges, a noted Gothic Revival architect, and he became one of the most noted architectural draughtsman in Britain.
