Description
1672 Plutarch on How to Study Poetry De Audiendis Poetis Greek Philosophy Latin
“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” ― Plutarch
This first century Greek scholar is well remembered for his biographies and essays, primarily Parallel Lives and Moralia. However, he wrote dozens of works, many have been lost, that covered a variety of topics. One of his least known, but highly important works, was ‘De Audiendis Poetis’ or ‘How to Study Poetry’ was an ancient Greek perspective on poetry and philosophy designed for young readers.
According to Schenkeveld,“Plutarch shows the ways of using poetry as an introduction of young children to the study of philosophy. Traditional are his views on poetry being based on imitation and containing much fiction and untruth.”
Plutarch also focuses on human virtues and vices and their relation to and how they influence poetry. However, it should be noted that opinions are reflected in poetry, not necessarily facts.
This 1672 edition was edited by Georg Weiss.
