Description
1789 Royal Navy Voyages Captain Cook Pacific Ocean Hawaii 8v SET Byron Wallis Carteret
John Hawkesworth’s ‘Relation de Voyages’ was an exceptional 18th-century collection of sketches of important British voyages. The most notable inclusion is that of James Cook, but many others are included as well. Hawkesworth gives accounts of Samuel Wallis, John Byron, and Philip Carteret, all of whom were remembered for discovery of islands and world circumnavigation.
In addition to reports of the voyages, Hawkesworth also describes the customs of the island inhabitants encountered by each explorer - clothing and apparel, foods and cookery, religion and government, and a general manner of life. It is also worth noting that this set makes mention of the weapons used by and the hostile behaviors of many of the islanders, especially those of New Zealand encountered by James Cook.
