Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beautiful, hand-carved wooden spear portion with a slender shaft, a grip bound with tightly-wrapped and knotted cord, and a thin neck with two sections of large, petal-shaped barbs and a larger, singular section consisting of dozens of scale-shaped barbs, all below an extremely-sharp point. The point of the spear is safely covered by a cap made from reeds bound with fibrous material and dark-hued resin. The function of the barbs is to disable the spear from being pulled out once thrust into its intended target, whether animal or human, as they act as small anchors around the entry point. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 1" W x 36.75" H (2.5 cm x 93.3 cm); 37" H (94 cm) on included custom stand.
