Description
1780 Picard’s Famous Nivellement Studied by Isaac Newton Astronomy Earth Measurements

Jean Picard was an important 17th-century French astronomer, known for his measurements of the size of the Earth. His most prestigious and well-known book was ‘Traite du Nivellement’, a work that was discovered and published by Philippe de la Hire in 1684. It wasn’t reissued until 1780, nearly 100 years after its initial edition, and is still considered one of the best works on astronomy from the 17th-century. This work primarily focuses on Picard’s discovery of measurements and distances of the earth. In fact, it was so accurate that it was referenced and studied by Newton on his research of universal gravitation.
