Item Details
Description
Oceania, Solomon Islands, ca. 1890 CE. A fine example of a qauata (sometimes quata) shield from the Solomon Islands, hand-carved from a coffee-hued hard wood. The shield has a lengthy, slender handle which terminates in a conical point, and a curved head with a central raised rib along the midpoint. This armament could be utilized as a striking club when swung at high velocities, or as a shield to deflect oncoming airborne spears. A raised but faded "W" symbol rests between the handle and head on both sides and represents either a frigate bird - an aggressive masculine symbol - or the gaping mouth of a large fish. Covered in a lustrous patina, this is a superb example of multi-functional weaponry! Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 14.5" W x 48.125" H (36.8 cm x 122.2 cm); 50.375" H (128 cm) on included custom stand.
