Description
Irish Easter Rising.- Russell (George William, journalist, poet, and agricultural economist, pseudonym "A.E.", 1867-1935) Autograph Letter signed to Dr. Charlotte Warner, Belfast Municipal Sanatorium, 2pp. & envelope, 4to, Irish Homestead headed paper, 15th May 1916, describing the situation of the Easter Uprising on the production of the Irish Homestead, "Let me make haste to thank you for your very kind letter. Our publishing office was burned but I am glad to think the actual loss to the Homestead will be small. We had to stop the paper for a fortnight because the streets were dangerous and civilians passing Sackville St where our printing office is to Merrion Square where I write were likely to receive bullets. I was obliged to remain in 84 Merrion Sq for five hours Monday the week before last because the street was pitted with bullets. Snipers got on the roof and the military shot at them... but actually the bullets just as often went into unoffending windows", folds, browned; and a small quantity of other letters etc., including: another ALs from Russell to Dr Warner on a future Irish settlement, "If we can come to agreement with Ulster which is satisfactory I will be overjoyed"; a TLs from Lennox Robinson (1886-1958), playwright, and an ALs from Lynn Doyle (1873-1961), humorist and a watercolour Christmas card from Tom Carr (1909-99), Belfast painter, folds, browned (sm. qty).
