Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A finely sculpted marble head of a bearded male - perhaps a depiction of Serapis. Serapis was a Graeco-Egyptian god who first appeared around the time of Alexander the Great. Sculptures of Serapis traditionally depict him with thick, wavy locks framing his face, and a full beard and moustache. Serapis was a god created by the fusion of Egyptian and Greek culture and later adopted into Roman religion. He is a combination of the attributes of the Egyptian god Osorapis (himself a composite of Osiris and Apis) with the attributes of a number of Greek gods including Zeus, Hades, Helios, and Dionysus. Size: 4.125" H (10.5 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection, acquired at Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York, New York, USA
