Description
A PAIR OF EDO/TOKUGAWA (1603-1868) POLYCHROME EARTHENWARE PORTRAIT SCULPTURES ON BASE, JAPANESE, polychrome, gilt and gesso on fired clay, resembling a seated Shogun or Samurai class figure, each with a bun hairdo over, elongated ear lobes, wearing long black, gold and red painted robes, centered by a large red belt, and is raised on a lotus base that is bisected with interior storage. Each base signed with a single character. Height: 15" Width: 9 1/2" Depth: 7"
Condition
Figure and base appear to be a marriage. Heavy paint and gesso losses, inpainting, apparent repairs near neck but also throughout, a loss of a finger, surface wear. Overall in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
