Description
Europe, Roman to Medieval periods, ca. 1st century BCE to 12th century CE. Perhaps one of the most cruel of all ancient military devices, an iron, four-pointed "jack" that, regardless of how it lands, always has one spike sticking upward. These were used in military encampments to secure the area around the camp so that no one can sneak up at night. They were also used on the battlefield to slow the enemy and the enemy's horses. Can you imagine the discomfort a horse would feel, and its reaction, when one of these pierced the bottom of their foot? These were also called murex. Size: 3" W x 1.95" H (7.6 cm x 5 cm)
