Description
ROSS, John, Sir (1777-1856). Appendix to the Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North-West Passage, and of a residence in the Arctic Regions during the years 1829, 1830, 1831, 1832, 1833. London: A. W. Webster, 1835.
Volume II (Appendix) only, 8vo (319 x 245 mm). Engraved portrait, 19 engraved plates (12 hand-colored). (Some pale spotting at beginning and end, some minor marginal chipping to frontispiece and a few leaves at beginning.) Publisher's blue cloth, spine gilt (recased preserving original spine and endpapers, some sunfading or pale stains to covers).
FIRST EDITION. Ross's privately funded second voyage in search of a North-West Passage necessitated publication of a substantial supplement, whose double-column list of the expedition's patrons, covering 36 pages, indicate the efforts Ross and others made to ensure the expedition's success. The expedition narrative was published earlier in the same year (see previous lot), leaving this supplement volume to detail the scientific and ethnographic findings of the expedition. The Appendix includes a detailed exposition on the Boothia Eskimos including a vocabulary, reports on chronometers, meteorology and magnetism, tables of Latitude and Longitude, Ross's theory on the Aurora Borealis, and James Clark Ross and John Richardson's reports on Naturaly history. Arctic Bibliography 14866.
Estimate $600-800
