Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Autograph Letter Signed "Danl of Thos Jenifer Island". One page of a bifolium, 7.5" x 8", n.p.; October 28, 1785. In a letter addressed to William Augustine Washington, the nephew of George Washington, the elder statesman attempts to muster support to dismiss an unlawful contract. It reads in full:
"Mr. Russell conceiving as well as myself, that in a late sale of the [illegible] Compy Land to Rob Long y the Commissioners that it had not been conducted agreeably to Law, by which evidence the Loss has been sustained to all concerned. Mr. Russell wishes you to join him in a Petition to the Assembly to set aside the sale. If you cannot come to Annapolis by the 12th of next month you might write to Thos. Stone Esq. to act for you." The letter is docketed by Washington on verso.
Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Island (1723-1790) was a Founding Father, Signer of the U.S. Constitution, Continental Congressman, and President of Maryland's first Senate. Thomas Stone was his nephew and signed the Declaration of Independence.
Condition: Usual mail folds with toning along folds on verso. Light foxing with small amounts of mounting remnants. Small amount of paper loss where seal was broken, two strips of tape used to stabilize on verso. Overall good condition.
