Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A hefty cast-iron axe head comprised of a rectangular socketing shaft with a thick butt, a sturdy neck, and a broad blade which droops downward towards the outer edge. Axes like this may have been used in battle as a throwing instrument or for hand-to-hand combat, though it was likely used for more utilitarian purposes such as chopping and shaping wood or mud bricks. Size: 7" L x 4.625" H (17.8 cm x 11.7 cm).
