Description
James Lynwood Palmer, 1868-1941, British, Active in NY, Canada, o/c, "Jenkintown Coach", 20" x 34" , signed and dated '95 lower left. This was done early in his career at the age of 27, perhaps before he returned to England where he painted many equine portraits. The coach's side has the following inscriptions: "The Rising Sun", on the front of the drivers seat, & "Branchtown" on the coachman's seat. There was a 6 passenger 4-horse drawn coach that ran from the Philadelphia area to Pittsburgh from 1809 to 1852. It's western terminus was the Rising Sun Inn in Monroeville, PA,; about 10 miles east of Pittsburgh and Branchtown is recorded as having in the 22nd ward of Philadelphia, near what is called Germantown today. This painting could be a unique peek into the trans-Pennsylvania public transportation system in the 1st half of the 19th c prior to the completion of the Pennsylvania Railroad line in 1852. This work descended in the Wanamaker family and Wanamaker could have been a patron of Palmer.
