19th century sentoku (copper alloy with zinc, lead and tin) Japanese sword tsuba with multimetal inlaid decoration of a scholar in a boat, a fan in his hand as he watches a crane in flight, all by a rock with bamboo grass and gnarled pine tree growing on it, the back with leafless bush and grass by rocks. Perfectly captured mood of the scene, excellent quality detailed work - see his face, robe patterns and fan texture, clusters of pine needles and differentiated feathers of the crane. Wonderful patina, in great condition. Height 2 9/16 inches.
