Description
Rare One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher, Western PA origin, circa 1855, finely-potted pitcher with ovoid body and tall collar, the midsection with incised banding, the rim and base of collar with pronounced turned moldings. Midsection of pitcher decorated with inverted, graduated swags. Spout and sides of collar decorated with vertical swags. An excellent representation of the potting abilities of early-period Western PA stoneware manufacturers, exhibiting wonderful color. A thin 3" Y-shaped crack on underside, which continues up reverse of pitcher, where it forms a 5" Y. Restoration to spout. A small restored chip to molding at base of collar, visible on side of pitcher.
