Description
Extremely Rare and Important One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Red Slip Decoration, Stamped "W STATES", Stonington, CT, circa 1811-1823, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with highly-unusual red-slip brushwork below the maker's mark and at the handle terminals. This color of slip is unknown to us in American stoneware production. Some small traces of greenish coloration to the red slip at the base of the handle suggest it is possibly made with copper fired in reduction. A noteworthy example of experimentation in early American stoneware slip decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A 1 3/8" in-the-firing surface chip to reverse. Some additional firing flaws to surface. A flake to top of spout.
