Item Details
Description
Egypt, Ptolemaic to Roman periods, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. A charming oil lamp in the form of a woolly sheep. The spout extends from the front of his body, which is turned partly in profile so that the animal's head faces the viewer. A small opening in the back allowed oil to be poured into the lamp, and a loop next to it allowed the lamp to be hung and spread light. Incised lines on the body create the impression of thick wool. Size: 3.6" W x 2.3" H (9.1 cm x 5.8 cm)
