Description
A VICTORIAN STERLING SILVER MOUNTED CUT GLASS TEA CADDY, RETAILED LEUCHARS & SON, HALLMARKED, SILVERSMITH WILLIAM LEUCHARS, LONDON, 1883, with a rectangular hinged lid centering a vasiform finial above a conforming rim hallmarked; "W.L," lion passant, leopard's head, date letter, "H," Queen Victoria's profile bust, and stamped, "LEUCHARS & SON LONDON & PARIS," on a rectangular box form body with underside centering a stylized cut star. Height: 6 1/2" Width: 4 1/4" Depth: 4 1/4" NOTE: Leuchars was established in London in 1794 by the founder James Leuchars. In 1837 it was awarded a Royal Warrant by the newly crowned Queen Victoria, and for the next forty years won various awards at international expositions. In 1870 a Paris location was opened by the son William and his son William Jr. In 1884, William Jr. sold the business to Asprey but maintained its retail operations until finally closing its doors in 1902.
Condition
Good condition for items of this age, use and materials, with a few minor surface marks, scratches and tarnish, the glass container has some tiny corner nicks, underside has surface wear from use,
