Description
Tao LengYue (陶冷月; 1895 - 1985) Chinese traditional scroll painting, ink and color on paper laid to silk, hanging scroll. Signed and dated, in the Autumn day of Dinghai year (ca. 1947)
Captivating imagery of bright moonlight lighting scholars within a pavilion nestled on peaceful waterside landscape. Tao was born unto a family of literati who taught him traditional and western painting techniques. Wavelike pattern is repeated throughout the image from the clouds, to the mountains and even the water. This repetitive pattern unifies the entire composition creating a harmonious quality. Various shades of ink are expertly used to give the illusion of lighting that rests on everything in its path. A silhouette of the waterfall is produced under the night sky. Semi-cursive script calligraphy is found in the top left corner followed by official red seals.
Measurements: Scroll Width: 27 1/2" Length: 69 1/2"
Painting Length: 28 7/8" Width: 19 1/4"
